Team mom or soccer coach? Which role do you play?

My 7-year-old daughter announced this she wants to play soccer for a fifth year in a row. We’re signed up and ready for our season, which begins in October.

Here’s the catch: Last year, I was one of three co-coaches for the team. While I found myself in that role a bit by default, I’ll admit, it was fun.

My daughter wants me to do it again.

I think I’ve got her convinced it would be better if I was “team mom” instead of coach. Last year, my then 1-year-old was barely walking. She was content to sit in the stroller or just hang out in the grass while the team practiced. This year, she’s a running, screaming, demanding 2 year old. I don’t think she’d be very content to sit anywhere for a 45-minute practice.

So I’m hoping another parent volunteers when we have the team meeting. We’re in this just for fun. When it comes to soccer, my daughter enjoys being with her friends and playing goalie, but she’s not terribly competitive.

Now, if this were diving we were talking about, it would be a whole different ball game. For that, I’m definitely sitting on the sidelines.

Are you signing your kids up for fall sports? How many? Which ones? And do you limit their activities each week? I’d love to hear your plans.
