Summer starts its sweet soundtrack

summerSummer burst wide open all over the Reese house in the last few days.
I mean “summer,” the holiday, not necessarily “summer,” the season.
Its dripping swim suits, loose goggles, 36 library books and bottles of sunscreen can be found in every nook and cranny of my car, my kitchen and my living room.
Its giggles over hours-long games of UNO Attack and whispers with a cherished friend who made her way across the country for four days have become a soundtrack.
Even with the dive team practice, swim team practice, piano lesson and, oh yeah, the emergency doctor visit, we’ve found our quiet moments.
They’re on a friend’s backyard swings. They’re the impromptu trip to grandparents for a dip in the pool.
They’re on the couch when not a voice is spoken, but plenty of words fill their heads as they devour page after page.
My son finished “The Hobbit” in a week. My daughter discovered reading really is fun.
Isn’t that the best part of summer?
We’ve sped up, then slowed down, collapsed into bed, then woken sleepy heads to get out the door and do it again.
There are “escapes from the heat” planned as well, where nothing’s on the agenda but days of leisurely walks to the beach or through the mountains, followed by conversation with family and friends, and, of course, that pile of library books.
