Back-to-school update and checking in on ’71 Toes’

Posted by on August 8, 2013 – 2:31 pm

How did it happen already? School’s just started and already we are up to our eyeballs in spelling lists and tracking “reading minutes” at our house. I’ve been up past 11 several nights in a row making sure snacks and lunches were packed (not necessarily for the kids, but for my husband and I so that I can help the kids with any last-minute issues in the morning).

I’ve even had a call from the school nurse and a kid home sick – all in the first week.

I spent last night attending curriculum night for one child and plan to attend another tonight.

first day of schoolAnd we have YET to get out the door by 8 a.m. Don’t ask about the first day of school. As you can see by the photo, I had a bit of a rough time waking the big kids up! Our bed times have shifted a bit, but not really as much as I would like. The kids – including the 3-year-old – are still too used to being up until after 9.

I just hope we get this routine down before my daughter’s six-week diving lesson session begins after Labor Day.

It’s been a while since I did a check on some of the other East Valley mom bloggers out there. But I took a look at “71 Toes” and I’m just in love with her back-to-school post. Take a minute to read it. I would adopt the “cookie chats” idea if only ALL three of my kids liked cookies (I have a silly boy who doesn’t). So I may have to alter it to “cupcake” or “chip” chats! What a fun idea.
I also liked her idea to tell two “facts” about each day – one real and one fake – as a way to get conversations rolling at dinner. We’re trying that tonight!
