Black Friday 2010

I have covered Black Fridays before and this year was no different. Shoppers wait for stores to open while standing out in the cold. I mapped out a plan with our reporter Michelle Reese as to the stores we would be at when they opened. The morning, or night still, started off at a Kohl’s store in Gilbert where I watched the line grow pretty fast for a 3 a.m. opening. Shoppers tried to stay warm huddled together while one couple I had been watching had …

Take Your Kid to Walk with you day!

Saturday, I brought my 3-year-old son, Alex, to walk along with me while I covered Pat’s Run in Tempe. Baseline Road was shut down for a few hours while filming took place. The filming was promoting the inaugural Cannonball Phoenix Spree which will take …

How to Illustrate Allergies

What’s an OK (and kinda boring) way to illustrate tree pollen for our story Rain, Warmer Weather Triggering Allergies ? Take a photo of a tree in bloom. What’s a better way? Get a photo of a bee picking up all that pollen.
I have to admit I didn’t plan on taking a photo of the bee. I was planning to shoot a flowering tree branch hanging over a sidewalk in downtown Chandler. The connection of photographing a bee for a story on pollen and allergies didn’t dawn on me until …

I was covering the send off rally of the Arizona Cardinals as they were leaving to New Orleans to play the Saints. Tons of fans and supporters showed up for rally at the airport. I was watching the cheerleaders dance during the celebration and noticed the Bidwill family waiting behind them for the team to show up.

One of the youngsters from the family had his eye on them, and I was talking with fellow photographers looking on at the boy. I was looking at the facial expression …
