Got payday plans? Kirby, Frazetta and Frank Miller original art hits the auction block
Last October we told you how the legendary comic-book artist Jack Kirby indirectly helped to exfiltrate American diplomats from Iran during the 80’s hostage crisis (as depicted in 2012’s Academy Award winning film, Argo.) Well, now you can own some of the original Kirby artwork that was used in that famous CIA mission, as well as a slew of other incredible pop culture masterpieces that hit the auction block starting August 1, 2013.
Collectible and memorabilia auction house giant, Heritage Auctions, begins its “August 2013 Vintage Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction (7079)” on Thursday, August 1, with the bidding to run through Saturday, August 3, 2013. Even if you don’t have tens (or hundreds) of thousands of dollars to spend, it’s still a lot of fun to see what these items sell for and to learn something about their history from the well documented item descriptions on the HA website.
Heritage Auctions had many of the items from this August auction on display at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, and I have to say that just being in the presence of the ultra-rare Action Comics #1, as well as many pages of classic original comic-book art, was as drool-inducing as being up close to Scarlett Johansson. (I didn’t see Scarlett at the Con, so unfortunately could not test this theory.)
In addition to the Kirby artwork (which includes the “Lord of Light/Argo – Pavilions of Joy” and the “Lord of Light/Argo “Planetary Control Room (Interior)” – both formerly owned by comic artist Jim Lee), some of the other auction items that caught my eye include Frank Frazetta’s Vampirella #5 cover painting, “Cornered,” and Frank Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns #2 original cover art, which is expected to fetch a half-million dollars or more. See the HA “Signature Auction” video promo HERE.
So while you’re window-shopping (or spending your hard earned millions), hit our comments and let us know which HA item you’d like to pick-up and why.
