A planned memorial statue to Dungeons & Dragons co-creator Gary Gygax in his hometown of Lake Geneva, Wis., will apparently now proceed after fans of the roleplaying game supported the effort by purchasing limited-edition reprints of the original hardcover rulebooks.

Wizards of the Coast, the Hasbro subsidiary that now owns the D&D brand, said Friday that it has submitted a “sizeable contribution” to the Gygax Memorial Fund, fueled in part by sales of the gorgeous AD&D 1st Edition reprints released last year. The company has been re-releasing many of its classic products in both physical and digital form as it retools the game for an upcoming 5th Edition and prepares to celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2014.

“The memorial is now happening!” a WotC spokeswoman said when contacted by Nerdvana for details.

There’s no word yet on when the memorial will be erected. The fund’s website says it has received municipal approval to build it in a public park and that it is expected to be completed within a three-year period.
