San Diego Comic-Con 2014: Friday – Seduction of the Innocent
As I write my recap of Friday’s activities at San Diego Comic-Con 2014, it’s 7 p.m. and I’m sitting in a lawn chair watching the sun set behind the marina that is just south of the convention center; but I’m not here for the scenery, I’m waiting in line for the Hall H panels that begin on Saturday morning, and there are already thousands of attendees in line in front of me.
After monitoring the H line throughout the day, I assumed that I was good after seeing only a hundred or so people in line, 15 hours before the doors open on Saturday. But when I went to take my position I found out that I had been looking at Friday’s line, and Saturday’s was across the street and already extended clear into the marina area.
After three years of being shut out of the big movie preview hall, I committed to getting into line early enough to gain entry to this year’s Warner Bros. and Marvel Studios offerings. We’ll see if 15 hours early is early enough stay tuned.
So what else was going on Friday? I was thrilled to be able to attend the Edgar Rice Burroughs panel first thing in the morning, after being disappointed at the lack of Burroughs programming at June’s PHXCC. A large crowd was in attendance and it was great fun to hang with fellow Tarzan and John Carter of Mars fans.
President of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Inc., Jim Sullos, gave the rundown of ERB projects that are in the works, including the new Tarzan movie (which began filming earlier this month), the August release of the “Constantin” computer animated Tarzan film, the “Tarzan Unleashed” mobile app, several upcoming Tarzan book releases, and, oddly enough, Tarzan casino slot machines that are very popular.
Additionally, having settled their legal disputes, the ERB estate is teaming up with Dynamite Entertainment on several new comic book series, including a complete relaunch of the Warlord of Mars title.
Writer Ron Marz discussed several projects he’s involved with, including the first comic adaptation of the Burroughs’ pulp character, The Mucker, and a re-envisioning of Tarzan’s son, Korak the Killer.
Legendary Tarzan artist Thomas Yeates gave a brief history of Ape Man artistry, and unveiled his new reworked ERB Inc. logo, which makes Tarzan much more prevalent.
The most exciting news from the panel was the announcement from Cave Girl artist Diana Leto that she has overseen the work on a Jungle Tales of Tarzan graphic novel that will have a different artist for each story in the anthology. The book won’t hit shelves until June 2015, but as Jungle Tales is one of Burroughs’ best books, it should be well worth the wait.
After the ERB panel, I hit the exhibit floor for a while and took some photos of all the fun. (Stay tuned for the gallery which will be posted as soon as I gain access to my laptop again.)
The other panel I attended Friday was “Dr. Wertham’s War on Comics,” where historian Carol Tilly spoke to the fallacies in the infamous psychologist’s book, Seduction of the Innocent, which prompted the 1950s congressional hearings on COmics’ alleged contribution to juvenile delinquency.
Dr. Tilly was incredibly knowledgeable about Wertham’s manipulation of data that led to the creation of the “Comics Code Authority,” which had drastic influence over free speech in the Comics’ industry for decades. You can read some of her fascinating research on BoingBoing.
