Bradbury biographer’s estate auction a treasure trove of sci-fi, pulp art
The pieces belong to Bradbury biographer Jerry Weist, who passed away last year, and include Michael Whelan’s stunning 1990 cover art for the 40th anniversary edition of Bradbury’s Martian Chronicles (pictured above) and Frank R. Paul’s Wonder Stories pulp cover from August 1930 (pictured below), each valued at more than $10,000. Laurence Herndon’s Blue Book magazine pulp cover featuring Edgar Rice Burroughs’ John Carter in A Fighting Man of Mars could be yours for as little as $5,000 (also below — insert joke about it outgrossing Disney’s adaptation here).
As well as these iconic sci-fi illustrations, the auction also includes top names from pin-up and American illustrations’ Golden Age, as well as children’s book art such as Where the Wild Things Are sketches by the late Maurice Sendak.
The sale is represented by U.S. auction house Heritage Auctions.
