Downtown Mesa’s Monsterland opened its doors for the Halloween season last October, with a two-story haunted attraction that consisted of elaborate sets and animatronics, and provided some much needed seasonal work for a slew of local monsters and maniacs. Super Bowl means super Sunday for the Nerdiverse! Not because of the big game, but because interspersed throughout the gridiron action will be a slew of new movie trailer premieres for your perusing pleasure.
The pre-game show starts at 11:00 a.m. this Sunday, February 5th, on NBC, and I’ve completed painstaking research throughout the inter-webs to compile this extensive list of not-to-be-missed film confections! It was heartbreaking to see Mesa’s retro grindhouse theater, The Royale, close its doors at the end of 2011, but as the old saying goes, “The show must go on!” Local artist, film buff and Royale associate Victor Moreno has taken that adage to heart and will be continuing to showcase genre favorites with his Cult Classics screenings now showing at the MADCAP Theater in Tempe.

Mesa Community College’s video game speaker series continues Jan. 25 with Chris Crawford describing his 20-year quest to develop software that generates stories for game play. It takes place 7:15 p.m. Wednesday in room LB145 of the MCC main campus at Southern Avenue and Dobson Road in Mesa.
