Gamers: Campers vs. runners

Quite a conflict has risen from two idealistic viewpoints in the world of first-person shooter video games. One group states that campers — players who stay in one spot during the entire game — are annoying pests without an ounce of gaming talent. However, campers insist they are playing intelligently and that runners are reckless and stupid. While animosity is present on both ends, my personal experience tells me that runners are always on the offensive, both literally and figuratively, and are constantly frustrated with gamers who camp.
Runners do just …

Saints Row: The Third review

A side mission is Saint’s Row the Third has your character streaking around the city in order to gain experience points and this is tame when compared to the rest of Saints Row. When I am asked about the game this is usually the first thing I tell people and it will always get one of two responses: hysterical laughter or a judgmental look. Depending on your response you will either find Saint’s Row to be fun and over the top, or horribly offensive.
Right off the bat, Saint’s Row the …

The death of used video games?

When I was a younger gamer I had a hard time getting new games. I had to rely mostly on birthdays, holidays, and the kindness of my parents for new games to sink my teeth into. I had one saving grace though. One tool at my disposal to get a new game that I wouldn’t other wise have had the means to obtain: used game stores.
Like millions of other crash-strapped Americans, being able to trade in my old games for shiny new ones has been a real money saver. Not …

Update on THQ job losses in Phoenix

Last week I reported on THQ closing their video game development studio in Phoenix. It’s part of a reorganization worldwide that will cost about 200 people their jobs.
The Phoenix Business Journal now puts the Phoenix operation’s share of those cuts at 48. THQ says it is trying to find affected workers new positions elsewhere.
The operation, formed as Rainbow Studios in 1996, developed the MX vs. ATV racing games, which have been discontinued as the company now seeks to focus more on “hardcore” gaming properties.
A quality assurance team in Phoenix will …

Sony trims $50 from PS3 pricetag

Just a month after Nintendo cut the price of its 3DS portable system, Sony is lopping $50 off the pricetag of its PlayStation 3.
The 5-year-old PS3 will now cost $249. A similar price cut in 2009 gave the hardware a much-needed boost, which Sony would welcome again as the system is not getting any younger.
Microsoft isn’t commenting on Sony’s move, and The Associated Press quoted an analyst who says we should not expect their Xbox 360 to drop in price any time soon as the company observes market reaction.
Sony’s gearing …
