This Saturday, Cab Comics in Flagstaff is having an event featuring comic book writers and artists from all over the state, including yours truly! I asked Cab’s Cory Bushnell some questions about running the only comic book shop in Northern Arizona.

For the folks in the Valley that haven’t heard of Cab Comics, can you tell us a little bit about the story’s history?

I was at Phoenix Comic Con two years ago where I sat in on a panel of how to run your own comic book store. There I heard them mention that Flagstaff didn’t have a comic book store. I moved up to Flagstaff in 2010 to be with my wife and was disappointed to find the state of comics in Northern Arizona. I decided to fill the void and start Cab Comics.

There is a support here to make sure small business succeed. Customers will come in and purchase books and say they rather help a local business then rather go online and get it cheaper.

What are some of the industry trends in Northern Arizona? What’s most popular in the shop right now?

Right now the most popular thing is comics. Its a toss up between Avengers vs X-men or Batman. The local college up here (NAU) just started and the population just doubled. It will be exciting to see what happens in the next month with zero issues from DC and Marvel Comics’ MARVEL NOW.

Are there any pros and cons of running a comic shop in Flagstaff in comparison to anywhere else in Arizona?

There is no other store in Flagstaff devoted to comic books up here. That is a pretty big pro. The con is sometimes over summer and the winter holiday things are slow but we keep busy and have a good population of locals that keep us going.

Tell us about the event on September 15!

September 15 we are having a event here called Arizona Artist and Creator Signing. Its to showcase some of the best talent in Arizona. People can come in and find out more about creating their own comic and meet some people who are in the industry. This is the first time we have had four of Flagstaff’s own in our event.
