The new film “Gravity,” about a woman fighting for her life while being cast adrift in the endless void of space, is blasting box-office records and is one of the most successful films of the year. But did you know that Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane, already covered this ground back when Gravity’s star, Sandra Bullock, was a mere 3 years-old?

In Superman’s Girlfriend, Lois Lane #81, with the cover date of February, 1968, legendary artist Neal Adams depicted Lois facing something much worse than fast-flying space junk – she was up against the wrath of a jilted Man of Steel.

Oh sure, he could have just evaporated her with his heat-vision, or thumped her in the noggin with a super-strong forefinger, but Supes apparently wants her to suffer for a bit and just pulls the plug on her air-supply. And it’s the perfect murder because “in space no one can hear you scream” (even though Alien was still ten-plus years away from this book’s publication.)

Fortunately for Ms. Lane, in the Leo Dorfman penned tale, “No Witnesses in Outer Space,” this outrageous orbital scenario only takes place in her mind after she gets a dose of mind-altering gas that gives her powers of E.S.P., allowing her to see what would happen if she were to marry an astronaut who has been vying for her affections.

I wish I had some of that E.S.P. gas so I could see what the Man of Steel movie would have been like if Sandra Bullock had played Lois Lane. At the very least her hair would have been the correct color.
