Eight, Arizona PBS gets its geek on
Our local PBS channel, Eight, Arizona PBS, is getting its geek on as they pull out all the stops to host a pair of genre-themed events during the month of October. With the airing of the upcoming documentary special, Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle, the “super-broadcasters” kick off a week of nerdgasmic celebrations.
First up is the awesomely titled, “BAM! POW! Bash,” which will feature the public showing of the new Superheroes: A Never-Ending Battle historical documentary film together with “super-fun” live entertainment, including: “Epic Super Hero Improv” by Torch Theatre featuring Guido Martin; an “Iron Cosplay” competition led by ASU State Press; a superhero costume contest presented by Yelp; special appearances by the Justice League of Arizona and the Arizona Avengers; prizes and registration for the 2013 PBS Nerd Walk, and Bookmans’ “Save the City” Photo Wall will also be on location for fantastic photo opportunities.
Eight, Arizona PBS promotions and events coordinator, Bob Beard, says, “I’m really geeking out over this film, as a fan of both comics and historical documentaries – and I know I’m not alone. Superheroes have cross-generational appeal. Everyone has a favorite character or an opinion about the best superpower to be imbued with – so we wanted to create a celebration of Superheroes that fans of all ages can come out and enjoy.”
The BAM! POW! Bash event takes place on October 15, 2013, at the City of Phoenix – Civic Space Park in downtown Phoenix (424 N. Central Ave., Phoenix 85004), show time is at 6:30 p.m. and the event lasts until 10:00 p.m. Register for the BAM! POW! Bash at www.azpbs.org/superhero.
But wait, there’s more! On Saturday, October 19, 2013, Eight, Arizona PBS hosts its extremely popular 3rd annual “Nerd Walk,” a community event where everyone who is “nerd for something” is invited to come out and participate.
Mr. Beard says, “The Nerd Walk is a place for people to come together and share their niche interests — united around the idea that it’s cool to be smart and it’s OK to be really enthusiastic about the things you love. So you’re into space, dark matter and black holes? Pop Opera? The pursuit of the perfect guacamole recipe? You’re in the right place!”
The PBS Nerd Walk has become so popular that it is even expanding to PBS stations in other states. To learn more or to register for the 2013 event, go to www.azpbs.org/nerd. Participation in the PBS Nerd Walk is free and includes a 2013 PBS Nerd t-shirt.
