San Diego 2011 slideshow

It’s better to see the San Diego Comic-Con than hear people try and explain it. With that in mind, here’s a the small portion of the craziness that happened to walk in front of my camera during those glorious four days.

- There were several impressive Lego statues around the convention floor. This ninja guarded one end of the Lego booth.
- I’ve seen plenty of Darth Vaders in my time, but this one was worthy of a photo, if only due to his sheer size. At well over six and a half feet, he looked like a true Sith Lord.
- One of the time machine DeLoreans from “Back to the Future III” was on display and available for photo opportunities.
- There were also several props from the movies, including these papers which show the possible fates of Dr. Emmett Brown.
- Adult Swim continued its tradition of non-traditional booths. This year their booth was mocked up as a park welcome center. This didn’t seem to hurt it’s popularity any, as the cleaned out brochure rack shows.
- Several fans around the show made it clear how they felt about the online vendor Comic-Con chose to sell passes through.
- One corner of the convention hall was devoted to displaying the newest video games, such as the Resident Evil shooter from Capcom.
- The Gears of War 3 multi-player demo stations were also popular destinations.
- All of the major houses from HBO’s “Game of Thrones” were represented by huge banners high above the hallways.
- This is the beginning of the line for Thursday’s Game of Thrones panel. While the line doesn’t look so bad here…
- The Game of Thrones line stretched all the way down the hall to this point.
- The line then continued snaking its way outside, doubling over itself numerous time, to this point.
- This is the end of the Game of Thrones line, outside the convention hall, down the stairs and well down the rear sidewalk. This is also two hours before the panel was scheduled to begin.
- This is why I always bring my own drinks..
- The San Diego Comic-Con floor as seen from above.
- Ahhh, a reproduction of Han Solo in carbonite, the perfect finishing touch on any geek’s decor.
- This was an excellent Baroness costume. However, I’m pretty sure she was a paid spokesmodel, which disqualifies her from the awesome costume competition.
- Actress Stana Katic was announced as the voice of Talia al-Ghul in the upcoming video game Batman: Arkham City.
- Kevin Conroy, the voice of Batman, Mark Hamill, the voice of Joker and Stana Katic shared the stage at the Batman: Arkham City panel.
- Fans that were lucky enough to find a spot in the Batman: Arkham City panel were treated to a trailer that revealed Solomon Grundy as one of Batman’s foes in the upcoming video game.
- I attended the invite-only party sponsored by IGN and the upcoming video game, Saints Row the Third. This party showed me one of the reasons why video games cost so much to develop nowadays. The party was held at a rooftop bar in the Hard Rock Hotel. While I don’t want to be judgmental, I somehow doubt most of the party’s attendees were very big video game fans.
- However, I did run into acclaimed comic book scribe Grant Morrison, pausing to chat and pose for a photo with a few lucky fans.
- Comic-Con security was out in force this year. They were inspecting and peace-bonding any and all weapons carried by cosplayers this year.
- The cutest duel between good and evil, got even cuter when one boy’s father was forced to stop the duel moments later to inform his son that while Yoda could Force Push, Yoda did NOT Force Choke.
- Between Han Solo, all the Slave Leia costumes and this R2 unit serving drinks, I had to take a second look to make sure I hadn’t stumbled upon Jabba’s sandbarge.
- As the San Diego Comic-Con came to a close for another year, exhausted, but happy fans streamed away from the convention center.
- I just made the cut-off for getting a sketch by artist Jamal Igle and paused to commemorate the occasion.
