For many people, Halloween is their favorite holiday of the year and an excuse to dress-up like their favorite creepy or pop culture themed character and leave the trappings of the real world behind for a short time; and for some people, once a year isn’t quite enough. Enter spooky-cute creators Daniel & Dawna Davis of Steam Crow fame and their second annual “Keen Halloween” event.

If ginormous bags of candy and Man of Steel costumes leave you feeling lifeless (in the bad way) and uninspired, then the Keen Halloween festival, happening September 28 – 29, 2013, may be just what the demented doctor ordered.

For a mere $9.18 (less than a bag of Dum-Dums or Smarties) you can enjoy a day of Halloween themed crafting, workshops, contests, music, entertainment and shopping from local artists like Victor Moreno, Madame M, Steam Crow and Tom’s Deadstuff.  If you would like to attend for the full weekend, the advance two-day pass is only $15.30 and children 12 and under are admitted for free.

Costumes are encouraged for the event, but if you don’t have one, the festival’s walk-up “Evil Genius Costume Bar” can likely help you out with expert tips and advice. There will also be an “Iron Skull Costume Challenge” where teams compete to create a costume live on stage from a box of mystery accoutrements.

Event founder, Daniel Davis, said, “Keen Halloween was a blast last year, with around 650 attendees, 17 vendors, and 10 hours of workshops and entertainment. This year, we’ve doubled our event to 2 days, 35 Monster Market vendors, and twice as many workshops to help make your Halloween better.”

“The Mission Creeps from Tucson are headlining Saturday night, and on Sunday we round out the show with our Iron Skull Costume Challenge. So, great Halloween stuff going on both days,” Mr. Davis added.
