Acclaim goes out with a whimper (again)

30 August 2010 No Comments Jayson Peters

A social gaming company has shut down what was left of the legendary video game publisher Acclaim just a few months after purchasing it.

Playdom, itself recently acquired by Disney, has ended all support for any remaining Acclaim-branded titles. Reimbursements are being offered to former customers who purchased “Acclaim Coins” for the martial arts MMORPG 9Dragons.

This is really the second death for Acclaim, which created such hits as Mortal Kombat, NBA Jam and Turok: Dinosaur Hunter before going bankrupt in 2004 and re-emerging as basically a new company that was a shadow of its former self.

Playdom creates games for MySpace and Facebook. UGO reports that the Acclaim-developed Facebook game Kogamu is still alive, but has been rebranded to replace the Acclaim name with Playdom’s.
