‘Stargate Universe’ canceled: Is the franchise dead?

Posted by on December 16, 2010 – 3:07 pm

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Syfy has canceled Stargate Universe. The last half of the second season will air in the spring. But what’s the point?

Further proof, if you ask me, that Syfy doesn’t have any faith in its products or their creators. In October the network canceled the Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica – also in its second season — just after greenlighting another BSG prequel, Blood & Chrome … which I’m sure will also go down in flames in its second season. Especially if it’s good.

But we already knew Syfy doesn’t care about quality content, critical acclaim or viewer demands.

Here’s the bigger question: Is this the end of the franchise that began with the 1994 feature film Stargate starring Kurt Russell and James Spader?

After all, a series of direct-to-DVD and movies based on the defunct previous TV series Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis has stalled, and MGM has just recently revoked the license for an Arizona company to make Stargate computer games (the online third-person shooter Stargate Resistance is no longer available for sale and shuts down next month).

Is Stargate dead? Is it time?

Im going to cry, the stargate franchise is my favorite thing of all time.

This was a well done show and the only tv show I actually looked forward to watching each week.

I sure hope this is false… Stargate universe is more interesting than any of the other stargate shows, including the 1994 movie. This SGU series is about space, and politics and how humans interact as much as it is about run and gun stargate travel. Just a great show with awesome writers

Im one of the biggest fan of this franchise, I even have all the DVD’s of SG-1 plus the Movies and DVD’s of SGA, still waiting for the SGU DVD’s. I even have all the Kino Webisodes and all the bloopers and outtakes of the franchise that I could find online. It greatly affected me when I found out and I really hope this is not the End!

Well I am sad about this too. It was the only show i wanted to watch. There is nothing on TV right now that is a SERIOUS, well thought out, space series. The Syfy channel is loosing its previous customer base and replacing it with wrestling and cheap to produce shows that require almost zero set production creativity that almost only require a camera and a few actors. I am a thoughtful, intelligent, viewer of thoughtful, intelligent, television. Where am I to go??

Soooo,….. MacGyver, love the hair, but seriously I’m highly upset. My squad in Iraq all had sg1 patches on our vest during patrol, so yeah I would say I’m a big fan. This all upsets me that all sg shows got ended and ended badly at that. Universe wasn’t my thing, I felt it was too dark and slow for my taste. But the thing is there is zoo much still left open. Why can’t we have somthing new from sg1, say a new team to go a third direction and tie in all the things we have already seen, like about a team that is more mobile, like a sg team based on the deadalus that are also 302 pilots. Granted I’m thinking out loud here but give me something…. How will I survive afganistan without a new stargate show….( gulp ).

well, I liked star gate sg1, the first movie and second one with the aliens, I hated that Stargate universe show, the first season sucked, second season got a little better, but only a plus in add one alien race, and what the hack is this BSG prequel, Blood & Chrome ?? never even heard of that..syfy never had a show called that?? at all here in the US. on directTV.
Ever time I tryed to watch stargate universe it got more dispressing of a show compared to sg1, it even is worse than star trek which was less depressing, if you want to depress people make a show like stargate universe where none of the characters on the show even want to be their, they compliend like ever eps during the first season and second season the best part of the show was the last eps to the series which end nicely, it was a mistake that they never even fingured out where the show was headed too, they just was making up stuff all the time, which in some cases can be alright as long as they don’t get too far of the plot, but the problem was they never had a plot from the beginning at least star trek was a plot, that star gate universe , ever went anywhere from star to end it was random , they made it up on the go almost, and the acting was really really bad it was easy-er to watch doctor who which has more plot and better acting when the bbc acting is better than a US show actors that means a bad thing from the gett-go.

    Is the franchise dead?
Yes, that was the plan , syfy wanted to end it so they setup a show that would fail no matter what, they came up with stargate universe to kill the franchise, it was their plan all this time, it kill all stargate based shows, these maybe where the same people who killed star trek enterprise from the airs too, people who want more real tv based shows, over the syfy ones…this is the realitity of real life based shows, they hate syfy shows that much…

  • http://www.syfy.com SyFy

also called soap-opras based shows which either have real tv realistic non-syfy shows, or shows based on real people which are really fate, but made to look real like if it happen in your life etc.. they don’t like syfy, and planed this stargate universe , so they could put more of their types of shows on the air, most likely their the same people who canniel the super hero based shows, like wonder woman, too.. it’s all the same people behind it most likely…this is a true facts maybe…

Sg-1 was and is my favorite. Sga was a very close second. I wasn’t a big fan of the Sgu I just watched it in hopes it would get better. I’m very sad to hear that there are no current plans for any Stargate shows. I can’t see how SyFy plans to stay in business with most of the programing they have now. Bottom line for me, bring stargate back! With Sg-1 or Sga type scrips.

Loved SG1, loved Atantis, universe eh, I watched it because I love scifi. Only Eli was a good character, I don’t think I liked anyone else that much. Really bad casting and writing. You have to have someone good looking and funny!
I hope this is not the end! I need my scifi!
