Kickstarter: Final frontier for canceled cult classic shows? Veronica Mars will tell …

Posted by on March 13, 2013 – 10:39 am

Veronica Mars will be back on the case after all these years. The 2004-07 UPN/CW teen drama/mystery series’ creator and executive producer, Rob Thomas, won the blessing of Warner Bros. to use Kickstarter to gauge fan support for a Veronica Mars feature film, and the starlet herself, Kristin Bell, is enthusiastically on board.

Of course, Warner Bros. still owns Veronica Mars and we would need their blessing and cooperation to pull this off. Kristen and I met with the Warner Bros. brass, and they agreed to allow us to take this shot. They were extremely cool about it, as a matter of fact. Their reaction was, if you can show there’s enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we’re on board. So this is it. This is our shot. I believe it’s the only one we’ve got. It’s nerve-wracking. I suppose we could fail in spectacular fashion, but there’s also the chance that we completely revolutionize how projects like ours can get made. No Kickstarter project ever has set a goal this high. It’s up to you, the fans, now. If the project is successful, our plan is to go into production this summer and the movie will be released in early 2014.

The question is, if the crowdfunding succeeds, will this change the business model for all those shows beloved by fans but cast aside by the networks? (Looking at you, Syfy.) Will Firefly fly again thanks to your contributions? Can Star Trek: The Next Generation’s resident Klingon, Michael Dorn, take his idea for a gritty war drama starring Worf to the fans for validation? Will anything ever die again?

We’re all producers now.

UPDATED: As I was writing this post, the campaign crossed the third-of-the-way mark toward its $2 million goal just hours after launching — with a month to go. As of Wednesday evening, the goal had been met and surpassed. The badge below shows real-time progress:
