Report: Abrams wants classic characters to lead next Star Wars saga
The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision has what purports to be a major scoop about the next Star Wars movie, with sources saying the writer shakeup last year that resulted in Oscar-winner Michael Arndt’s departure being chalked up to a desire to focus on new characters rather than the Original Trilogy triumvirate of Luke, Han and Leia.
According to the report, Abrams balked at relegating the classic Star characters to secondary roles, at least for Episode VII. Friday Night Lights’ Jesse Plemons is reportedly now up for a role, as are Michael Fassbender and Hugo Weaving (maybe). There’s even talk of casting Obi-Wan Kenobi’s daughter of granddaughter, which is … unexpected.
How big a role do you want to see the old characters have in the new trilogy? Does it still make sense for them to pass the torch — or has that starship sailed?
