Syfy celebrates 20 years of disappointing nerds
Revisit those halcyon days when the cable network celebrates its 20th anniversary with a two-hour retrospective program on Monday, Dec. 10. The special is narrated by Dean Cain (who has done his time in Syfy “original movies” but never headlined a series on the network despite starring in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) and will also feature cast and crew members from programs past and present.
Now, I give Syfy a hard time for their blatant disregard of viewers’ obvious preferences and for cutting short programs that have palpable fanbase support … despite once rescuing Stargate SG-1 from Showtime’s dumpster and using it to build a successful business into an even-more-successful business. But 20 years of a channel still at least marginally devoted to science fiction is indeed an achievement worth celebrating. Farscape. Battlestar Galactica. The various Stargates. Warehouse 13. A legacy like this gives one hope for the future. “Imagine Greater,” indeed.
