Doctor Who to explore deeper inside the TARDIS once more
Last season on Doctor Who, fans were treated to an award-winning script by sci-fi superstar Neil Gaiman that explored the thoughts and feelings of the Time Lord’s trusty vehicle, the TARDIS. Now, next year in the latter half of Season 7, we’ll finally start exploring the inner reaches of the bigger-on-the-inside structure itself.
Screenwriter Stephen Thompson, who wrote last year’s pirate romp “The Curse of the Black Spot,” is the scribe behind “Journey to the Centre of the TARDIS.” He tells Doctor Who Magazine that showrunner Steven Moffat wants to write over some of classic Doctor Who’s missteps when it comes to the TARDIS’ labyrinthine interiors. Many rooms were seen at various points during the long-running original series, but 1978’s “Invasion of Time” fouled things up a bit with unremarkable abandoned-hospital sets that took too much of the alien mystery out of the TARDIS.
Beyond the main console room, very, very little of the TARDIS’ innards have been depicted since Doctor Who returned in 2005 after a 16-year absence. A deeper exploration of the time capsule’s infinite insides has been on my wish list for a long time — I just wish it had been approached more consistently throughout the series rather than saved for an “event” episode like this appears to be, but I’m glad it’s finally happening regardless.
