Samsung’s Smart Window: Welcome to the Minority Report

17 January 2012 4 Comments Ryan Biggs

CES 2012 has brought a lot of cool tech ideas to the world, and one of the most exciting is Samsung’s Smart Window. Essentially, Samsung has plans to turn your ordinary windows into interactive displays that even Apple would be jealous of. But not only is your window a display, it’s a full on computer.

Check out the video for a brief demonstration of the concept. Let’s hope Samsung is able to bring these to market. I only hope that it will be affordable and that I’ll live long enough to see the day where these are as common as televisions.

I can’t tell if the Samsung SmartWindow is actually transparent or if it creates the illusion of transparency via a camera. Can someone expand of this?

From what I have found (and here’s another video with some additional insight) the screen is, essentially, a window. It allows you to see anything on the other side, with the ability to block out any incoming light with that “blinds” feature. In addition, it’s a once-sided pane of glass, meaning people on the other side won’t be able to see the display.

It uses a camera for the “illusion”.
