The Event blues: More about the money and less about the reader

As any current comic reader can tell you, most companies like Marvel and DC shell out annual books that have a universe-spanning story that involves all or most of their major characters. These overgrown story-tyrants have been dubbed Events. In the past there have been moments where this made sense like Crisis of Infinite Earths from DC Comics or Avengers Disassembled from Marvel. Since then, Events have become a constant one-ups-man after another, creating an incredible amount of degradation in storytelling.
Basically, we’re at the point where they kill off big …

What a tangled web we ‘shoot’ …

Marvel has recently released new images from its upcoming The Amazing Spider-Man movie (release date – July 3, 2012) and I was thrilled to see the first close-up look at Peter Parker’s web shooters. Yes, that’s right people, real mechanized web-shooters!
While the updated ‘Amazing’ version of the Spidey tale looks to be an amalgamation of many different web-crawling interpretations, at least this time they are getting the web shooters right (well…hopefully.) I have a lot of love for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man flicks (uhh…not so much number 3), but the …

Tracking down comics in the East Valley

With the rise of comics being available online in digital format, it’s easy to forget that there are places in the Valley that regularly sell comics — yes, printed books that you can hold and collect and keep! Digital comics, while convenient, deprive the avid comic book reader the feel and smell of the ink hot off the presses. It’s like comparing Captain Cold to Mr. Freeze! No contest! A file on a computer can never compare to the good old four-color fun.
Finding favorite comics can be like searching for …

Captain America a patriotic, pleasant action experience

For those of you who may be hesitant to see ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’ because you’re afraid you’ll be watching the Human Torch in a two-hour-long preview for the upcoming ‘Avengers’ movie, have no fear.

X-Men Born This Way parody releases legit music video

Last month the folks at TheWarpZone released this acoustic parody of Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” inspired by X-Men: First Class. They promised that, if it received a good response, they would release a full-fledged music video.
Well, apparently you asked for it, so here it is:
I kind of hoped they would do it, and the finished product has really exceeded my expectations. The costumes look great and it looks like they had a lot of fun with it. Maybe not quite as … sophisticated as career parody songwriter “Weird Al” …

‘Captain America’ runs on Dunkin

The fireworks may have come and gone, but a Dunkin’ Donuts store in Tempe will be celebrating America on Thursday morning — Captain America, that is.
From 6 to 9 a.m., the Dunkin’ at 1740 E. Broadway Road will be hosting a patriotic-themed event with a water-balloon toss, “dunk” tank, shield-making craft inspired by the Marvel superhero and free comic books from Samurai Comics in Phoenix. There will also be a prize pack of advance screening passes to the Captain America movie and gift cards to Dunkin’ Donuts and Baskin-Robbins for …
