What exactly is Apple making in Mesa?
A few months back when Apple announced a 700-job manufacturing plant in Mesa, it was mentioned that GT Advanced Technologies would use the facility to “produce sapphire material for Apple products.”
Mashable points out a grudging confirmation of that from Apple CEO Tim Cook in a more recent interview, and tried in vain to feel him out on whether the material made in Mesa would be used for iPhones with larger screens or a watch-like device. (Apple is rumored to be developing both, and sapphire glass is known to be more resistant to scratches and cracks than the famously fragile displays of current iPhones and iPads — and, indeed, Apple Stores.)
The East Valley Tribune reported Dec. 31, 2013, that the Mesa plant could be producing … whatever it’s producing by the end of this month. That should leave plenty of time for you to stake out a spot in line to buy it.
