Just an incredible game to watch last night, as Gilbert Highland escaped with a 67-66 overtime win over Chandler.
I wasn’t at last year’s tournament game when Chandler knocked out Highland in the first round, but Nick Johnson said the game was remarkably similar, in that the Hawks blew a big lead and the game went into overtime. It looked like Chandler had the game won when Chris Johnson missed a shot as time wound down, but Nick Johnson saved his big brother with a putback.
Nick Johnson played an unbelievable game. After settling for 3-pointer shots early, he really attacked the basket in the second half, and no one on the Wolves could stop him. It’s easy to see why college coaches are drooling over him.
I can’t say enough about Chandler’s comeback in the fourth quarter. The team was poised the entire time, and played nearly flawlessly down the stretch. The Wolves went up by double digits early, before Highland started dominating in the middle of the game. Chandler could have folded after Highland’s big run in the third quarter, but there is no quit in that team.
Matt Carlino settled for outside shots almost exclusively in this one. He had 15 shots, 14 of which were 3-pointers. It was a probably a combination of a hip pointer that’s been bothering him and Chandler’s tight defense, but it would be nice to see him drive more.
Wednesday’s game against Gilbert should be a lot of fun. If it comes anything close to this one, the fans won’t be disappointed.
