East Valley athlete wins national pentathlon title

Austin Hornbaker,  a seventh-grader to be at Kyrene Aprende Middle School in Chandler, won the Midget Boys (11 and 12-year old) pentathlon event on Wednesday at the USATF National Junior Olympic Track & Field Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Austin Hornbaker won the Midget Boys pentathlon competition on Wednesday, July 28 at the USATF Junior Olympic National Championships in Sacramento, Calif.

Hornbaker, who competes with the Arizona Cheetahs track club, won by just two points, scoring 2,495 combined points in the five events that make up the pentathlon (80 meter hurdles, shot put, high jump, long jump and 1,500 meter run). Hornbaker edged Daniel Richardson of Team Raw Track Club (Bakersfield, Calif.), who was second with 2,493.

Richardson ran a 5 minute, 12.67 second 1,500 in the final event of the pentathlon, but needed to run under 5:12 to catch Hornbaker, who finished the 1,500 in 5:25.82.

Hornbaker got off to a flying start, winning the first two events of the day, the 80 meter hurdles (13.36 seconds) and the shot put (11.71 meters or 38-feet, 5 inches). Hornbaker then finished with the second-best effort in the high jump (4-9) and the third-best long jump at 14-10.5.

Hornbaker’s score was 390 points better than his qualifying performance at the Region X meet.

In the Midget Girls pentathlon, Aubree Incardone of the Arizona Flames finished second with 2,663 points. Incardone, who was the Region X champion, finished behind Sasha Goff, an unattached competitor from California. Goff scored, 3,172 points.

Also on Wednesday, Ellerie Lagerhausen, a senior at Dobson High School and a member of the Arizona Cheetahs, finished third in the Young Women’s (17-18) 3,000-meter race walk. Lagerhausen finished in 18:27.30, just .30 behind the second-place finisher.

In the 4X800-meter relay event, the Arizona Flames brought home a fourth-place finish in the Youth Girls (13-14) division. The team of Alysoune Coleman, Jessica Williams, Taylor Frick and Katherine Divall dropped nearly 10-seconds off their season-best, finishing in 9:53.20.

On Tuesday, the first day of the six-day national championship meet held at Sacramento City College, Notre Dame senior Kristina Vanderhout placed fourth in the Young Women’s 2,000-meter steeplechase, running a 7:24.57.
