Kayla Pederson drafted in first round of WNBA draft
Former Red Mountain standout Kayla Pedersen is headed to Tulsa this summer after she was taken by the Shock in the first round (No. 7 overall) of Monday’s WNBA draft.
A two-time Tribune Player of the Year at Red Mountain, the 6-foot-4 Pedersen just completed four years at Stanford, where she averaged 12.6 points and 8.4 rebounds as a senior for the Cardinal, who (not coincidentally) went to a fourth consecutive Final Four (two of which were national championship game appearances).
She played in all but one game (concussion) in her four-year career at Stanford, and is the Pac-10 all-time leading rebounder in women’s basketball history (1,266). She was named the Pac-10 Freshman of Year in 2008 and was an all-conference players all four years.
She’s also Stanford’s career leader in games played (150), minutes (4,762) and seventh in scoring (1,941 points).
