The folks over at Maxpreps.com will be choosing a national Player of the Year in early July, once everyone has finished up their baseball seasons.

They put out a preliminary top-10 list of candidates, and both Mountain Pointe catcher Kevin Cron and Mesquite right-hander Zach Davies are on the list.

Both teams are alive in the 5A Division I state baseball tournament, with Mountain Pointe needing one win over Desert Ridge on Thursday to make the championship game for a second straight year. Mesquite was knocked out in the semifinals last season, and needs to beat Hamilton twice for a shot at the finals.

Cron has set state single-season and career home run records this season. Davies is 12-0 with a 1.79 ERA.
