Aguano forced to play The Name Game

Posted by on May 19, 2011 – 11:59 am

Shaun Aguano’s first name shouldn’t be too difficult to remember. Five letters. Nothing uncommon about it. For a native of Hawaii, it could be a lot tougher.

However, the spelling of it has been something of a fiasco since he was mentioned as the heir apparent to Jim Ewan as Chandler’s football coach.

The confusion comes from his school-appointed email. When Aguano was first hired at Chandler about a decade ago, he was given an email address that spelled his first name ‘Shawn.’

How or why the district spelled his name wrong is unknown, but it happened.

Even though his name is spelled correctly on the school’s website, many assumed he was Shawn Aguano because of the email address. A quick google search shows he has more commonly been referred to as ‘Shawn’ than ‘Shaun’.

Recently, Aguano’s wife had the email address switched to the correct spelling. However, he didn’t get a single email for five or six days, so he switched it back to the old, incorrect one. His email had been the same for so long that everyone had it saved with the spelling of ‘Shawn’.

I was in his office the other day, and chuckled when I saw a business card with the correct spelling on it. Aguano said even his hometown paper in Hawaii couldn’t remember the correct way to spell his first name.

I joked that he should send out a press release to clear up the confusion, but maybe this column will help do so.

In conclusion: When sending him an email, address him as Shaun. Just be sure to send it to Shawn.
