Jahii Carson, Team USA struggle in first exhibition

Jahii Carson (Tribune file)It wasn’t a good start for the U19 Team USA men’s basketball squad in Lithuania on Sunday.

Lithuania’s U20 team jumped out to a 32-8 lead after the first quarter and cruised to a 101-72 victory in an exhibition matchup. Mesa High point guard Jahii Carson played nine minutes, making one of three shots for two points and had three turnovers, two fouls and no assists. Team USA shot just 35.5 percent as a team.

This might be understandable, as there were multiple factors working against the team. It had to fly halfway across the world, while Lithuania U20 played at home. The Lithuanian team had players a year older, and this Team USA squad was cobbled together in the past few weeks and does not have a ton of time together.

Tim Hardaway, Jr., led Team USA with 18 points. Joe Jackson had 13 and eight rebounds. The full box score can be seen here.

Team USA will play another exhibition on Tuesday against the Lithuania U19 team. The World Championships begin on June 30.
