Basha boys advance to hoops tourney finals; Jahii Carson update
The Basha boys basketball team defeated Mesa 57-52 to advance to the Arizona Summer State High School Basketball Championships at Wells Fargo Arena on Thursday night.
The Bears will face off with Agua Fria, which defeated Fountain Hills in the other semifinal. Basha had a three-point lead with 39 seconds remaining and hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold on against the Jackrabbits, according to a release.
The Skyline girls team lost to South Mountain, 43-15, in a semifinal game. South Mountain and Marana will play at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena, preceding the boys game. Tickets for the day are $5 for adults and $3 for students/children.
After not playing in Team USA’s second exhibition game, another blowout loss to a Lithuanian national team, Jahii Carson made his presence felt in the U19 squad’s first game in the U19 World Championships in Liepaja, Latvia.
Carson had two points, two rebounds and a team-high seven assists in Team USA’s 115-60 blowout win over Egypt. He played 11 minutes and had only one turnover.
USA will play Serbia on Friday. The winner of that game will be the only undefeated team left in Group D. It will then play China on Sunday. The top three teams from each pool will advance, so Team USA looks to be in good shape to make it to the next round.
