Boys hoops coach Jase Coburn leaving McClintock
McClintock boys basketball coach Jase Coburn is leaving to coach at Howard College, a junior college in Big Springs, Texas, Chargers athletic director Susan Edwards said.
Coburn has coached McClintock since 2007, compiling a record of 74-39 in four seasons. He led the team to the 4A Division I state championship in 2010, as the Chargers defeated Royce Woolridge and Phoenix Sunnyslope in the title game.
Coburn coached McClintock this summer and was on hand at the Desert Duel summer club basketball tournament last week to watch former player Cameron Forte. He informed his players of his plans on Friday. He played locally at Mesquite.
“I’m sorry to see Jase go, but it’s a great opportunity for him,” Edwards said.
Edwards will likely begin interviews after Coburn officially leaves following an August 17 board meeting . She hopes the team’s recent success will result in a solid pool of candidates.
“That’s the goal, to get the best candidate,” she said.
Coburn’s departure continues a year of transition among coaches at the school. Football coach Mike Gibbons was fired after last season and replaced by Saguaro offensive coordinator Matt Lewis.
Girls basketball coach Eric Magana left to become the boys basketball coach at Higley. Magana led the Chargers to the 4A-I championship game in 2009, where they lost by four points to top seed Canyon del Oro. He is replaced by Tim Dixon.
Baseball coach Brent Pearce resigned this spring after just one season as coach. He had replaced long-time coach Harold Bull. Nathan Sheppard is the new baseball coach.
Even Edwards is new. She came over after being principal at Corona del Sol. She replaces Stacy Nielsen.
