Corona del Sol guard Calaen Robinson commits to ASU
Corona del Sol guard Calaen Robinson has verbally committed to Arizona State.
Robinson, the Central Region’s Player of the Year, joins Hamilton’s Eric Jacobsen and Raymond Kellis’ Kenny Martin as the three commitments to the Sun Devils for next season. It is the first time in more than a decade that three players or more from the state are in the same recruiting class at ASU.
Robinson considered Washington State, Brigham Young, UNLV and St. Mary’s but eventually decided on ASU.
“It feels good,” Robinson said. “I’m very relieved. There were a lot of schools looking at me, but ASU stuck out the most, like a sore thumb.”
Robinson said he has known Martin and Jacobsen for a long time, and he is also close with Jahii Carson, who joins the team out of Mesa High this year. Robinson will play both guard positions at ASU, but likely more off the ball with Carson at the point.
“It’ll be a fast-paced game,” Robinson said.
He said playing close to home was important because his mother wants to watch him play often.
Corona del Sol is expected to be one of the best teams in Division I this season. The Aztecs lost to Mountain View in the 5A-I quarterfinals last year.
