Mesquite QB Bevan expected to play

Posted by on September 8, 2011 – 3:52 pm

Mesquite coach Matt Gracey said senior quarterback Steven Bevan has practiced all week since he suffered a concussion last Friday night and will play against Chandler on Friday night.

Bevan, who’s also the Wildcats punter,  got hit midway through the second quarter and didn’t return in an 8-7 win against Red Mountain. Ryan Diedrick entered the game and helped complete the Mesquite comeback with a touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter. Karai Keil filled in as Mesquite’s punter. He took a punt snap and ran 25 yards for a key first down during the Wildcats’ game-winning drive.

In the moments after last week’s win against Red Mountain, Gracey said Bevan’s disposition had improved even while standing on the sidelines for the second half.

“He’s been running around all week,” Gracey said. “I’ll never come close to compromising a kid’s health or safety for the sake of football, but he should be OK.”
