Arizona State offers scholarship to freshman Kirk

Posted by on January 10, 2012 – 9:51 pm

Saguaro freshman wide receiver Christian Kirk has picked up a scholarship offer from Arizona State, Sabercats offensive coordinator Jason Mohns said in an email.

Kirk had 34 catches for 589 yards and six touchdowns last season for Saguaro. He was recently named to the MaxPreps/Air Force Freshman All-American team.

Mohns said new Sun Devils offensive coordinator Mike Norvell watched Kirk’s game tape and made the offer earlier today. It is Kirk’s second scholarship offer, on the heels of one last week from UCLA.

these players should be off limits to all colleges until after their junior year of high school. this kid is a high school freshman and a lot can happen in 3 years. this kind of announcement will have an effect on him and most of the time it is not positive. too much pressure too soon. and what, is mohns his agent now or is he just trying to use him as leverage to get the saguaro head coach job?

  • someone says:

I agree! too early to offer this kid so early. I believe it puts way too much pressure on him now to live up to the hype. I do believe Mohns is just riding this kids coat tails to try and not lose his job now. He has been riding Christian’s coat tails for years. He won’t land the head coaching job as he does not have a teaching degree.

Whoa – easy “parents”…what you might not know about “this kid” is that he had set each and everything he has accomplished his Freshman year in football as a personal goal. Good for him on accomplishing each and every thing he’s set his mind to and worked VERY hard for!! What you might consider “pressure” in your own humble opinion might actually be what makes him thrive. Shame on you for your negativity. Remember…if you can’ say anything nice, then you shouldn’t say anything at all.

don’t know about the teaching degree requirement, thats interesting. i was good with sanders until the chap game (i thought he was bluffing and was shocked when he actually did not play the starters) but at least he was a football player and a very experienced coach. i know mohns has been successful at the youth level for a few years but he needs maturity and much more high level (11 man) football experience to take over the saguaro job. another few years under sanders would have been really good for him.

call me old fashioned but i like my football coaches to actually have been high school and or college football players and if they weren’t (mohns wasn’t) they better have a good long, solid football resume’ showing growth, progression and success. mohns isn’t ready yet.

  • a parent says:

if he is in high school he is still a kid in my mind and i have nothing but strong support and good wishes for him and all the other kids. the players are not the problem, the adults are. all i am saying is that these kids, teenagers, adolescents, young men or whatever you want to call them deserve as much protection as we can give them. that time of life is hard enough. let them grow and develop without all the extra hype and pressure.

Kirk seems like a good kid and player, but part of the hype is due to where he goes to school… If he was at Coronado, no one would recognize his talents..That said, good for him and hope he continues his success.
