Mtn. View-Skyline soccer melee could have implications
The dust still hasn’t completely settled from last weekend’s melee between the Mountain View and Skyline boys soccer teams.
The two schools played a regular season match on Saturday, where several red cards were issued to Skyline players (and a couple fans) from the early stages of the match. A red card is an automatic ejection from that match and subsequent one-match suspension.
With Mountain View leading 3-1 late, the match was eventually called by the officials with approximately 15 minutes left because red cards were prohibiting Skyline from fielding enough players.
That’s when a melee broke out and more red cards were issued. Mountain View athletic director Shawn Rustad said 24 red cards were issued (18 to Skyline, six to Mountain View).
The schools were supposed to meet again Monday night, but the match was ruled a forfeit because Skyline couldn’t field a squad due to the automatic one-game suspension issued to anyone who receives a red card.
“It goes without saying that I am upset with the events on Saturday but it was unavoidable from our perspective,” Toros coach Mike Sullivan wrote in an e-mail. “One team came out to win a soccer match and the other came out to fight. It was a definite blemish on our season but hopefully we will bounce back.”
Mountain View is scheduled to play Hamilton (8-2) on Thursday night in the regular season finale, while Skyline was scheduled to play Red Mountain on Tuesday night to conclude the Coyotes’ season.
Mountain View is waiting to hear from the Arizona Interscholastic Association as to whether Monday night’s “forfeit” match counts as serving the automatic one-match suspension for its players who received red cards, though a player who previously received a red card earlier this season could face a two-match suspension, and would not be eligible to play in the regular season finale.
At No. 10 in Division I power points entering Tuesday’s matches, the Toros are also vying for one of seven at-large state tournament berths. The AIA must also determine whether both schools will receive a “forfeit” of Monday’s match, or just Skyline.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the official power rankings list Mountain View (9-2) as having a victory via forfeit, and Sullivan said he was told Mountain View will receive two wins, and not a double forfeit.
“It would be criminal if we didn’t,” he wrote.
But if a double forfeit is issued, it would count as a loss for both schools, Mountain View’s record would be 8-3, the Toros would lose their 70 victory points from Monday’s “forfeit” and further muddle their chances of making the postseason heading into Thursday’s match.

WOW! That statement doesn’t seem very professional coming from the coach. Oh well, thats the Mtn.View Higher Than Thou attitude in full affect. Sad

Skyline Parent- sounds like the actions of the Skyline players back what the MTV coach said. 17 players ejected! They should have to forfeit the rest of their season.
What are you talking about? 18 red cards means they were there to fight… he was speaking the truth. And now I know Skyline = thugs.
Skyline sucks at everything..apparently they suck at fighting as well
As a MV parent who was at the game, I am embarrassed by the coach’s statement and find it inflammatory. The red cards were isssued in a very biased manner. Many times, a MV kid initiated an altercation, but I guess they are smart enough to hide it from the ref. My son is not Mormon, but we all know the final score in Mesa. White Mormon MV kid = Angel, Hispanic Skyline kid is assumed to be a thug. I’m embarrassed to be from MV.
It was a MV parent who so helpfully provided the ref with the numbers of any Skyline kid who was near the melee at the end. The final ref report indicated that Skyline players ALL left the bench, and no MV players did. I was at the game, and this is blatantly false. ALL of the players from both teams left the bench. Also, this is Skyline’s only fight of any kind in the 5 years I have been around the team, but it is Mountain View’s third fight in 2 seasons. Who are the thugs??
Skyline was not “there to fight.” Mountain View threw the first punches and the players were just defending themselves. This article is pretty biased basing the article on one opinion. Of course the MTV coach is going to say his players are innocent. It is unfortunate that no one even bothered to reach Skyline for their view on went on. Once more Skyline gets pushed aside but in reality they were there to play a game and not fight. The referee lost control of the game and issued cards left and right. Both teams are just as responsible and if the majority of both teams fought why was just one school awarded the majority of cards? It doesn’t make sense. Way to be classy mountain view.

Pretty said that the parents and athletes are immature. skyline should be done and these thugs, I mean players should be suspended for this kind of crap they are bringing on the field. suspended them from any other games and from some games next year if they are underclassmen. The skyline coach should show true leadership by doing this.
Opps, sad, not said.
First off, unless you were there we can’t act or pretend that we know what exactly went down. Referees have their own agendas many times and cards are an easy way to control a game that got out of hand already. Sending off a coach or player gets them out of the situation so they don’t have to deal with it. A good referee can calm a game down while a bad one can let it blow up in their face. Just because Skyline received 18 Red cards DOES NOT mean they were there to fight. In no way am I backing what happened and what the players did to get the red cards (I don”t know what they did in particular). But a player can get a red card for leaving the bench during an altercation, even if they don’t participate in said altercation (remember a few years ago with the Suns in the playoffs, some players got off the bench but didn’t do anything aggressive or physical and got suspended for a game) My guess would be that the majority of Skyline players got red cards for that – not actually fighting. I don’t know of any group that would allow their teammates to be outnumbered 15(Skyline) to say 5 or 6(Mountain View)in a fight and not do something about it. So to say everyone from Skyline went to fight is probably not accurate.
I was at the game and I am APPALLED at the Mt View coaches statement. It was in fact Mt View who initiated the fight (anyone really surprised?). There are a few referees who are very biased towards Mt View – I have seen it at many games against various other schools. Why does Mt View keep getting away with this crap. After the game the Mt View AD even said he thought Mt View should be required to sit out the rest of their games and forfeit any shot at playoffs. Come on AD – keep your work. Mt View does not deserve a spot in the playoffs. And if Skyline’s program is in jeopardy then so should Mt Views. The real thugs – Mt View.
Do they even come to a game with that many red cards LOL. I didn’t even know that Skyline had fighting or had competition in them.
To be TOTALLY honest, even we had issues at Mtn. View and scuffles that didn’t quite get as out of control as this game. Nonetheless, after this, we played Skyline. I observed on several occassions skyline kids helping RM kids up, patting them on the back after plays or goals and vice versa. Are these the same kids that “Came to fight”? No I don’t think so. Skyline’s motto from what I hear was “Family” this year. Not condoning the fight, but don’t family members protect one another. There’s a saying,”Attitude reflects leadership”. From what I’ve seen on a number of occassion and so blantant in this article is, the leadership at MV is setting those kids up to be confrontational, and the kids at Skyline should have a tighter reign on their emotions. Mind you, in this game, no support staff from MV, no security and no SRO were present, perhaps this had made a difference in the situation. To call Skyline thugs as some of the other posters on here said is ignorant, to call MV angels, is just the same. It all starts at the top, blame the coaches and refs for losing control, blame the MV admin for not facilitating a safer environment.
I am an outside viewer and what I saw was mountain view pushing and shoving skyline kids when the refs back was turned but skyline was not as smart and retaliated well the ref was looking. Both benches cleared and both teams deserved to be suspended for a couple games. Fans were ejected from skylines side after the ref caught sight of retaliations against mountain view that resulted in a card for skyline and nothing for MV

My sons team played against both of these schools this year. I was completely appalled at the lack of sportsmanship and inappropriate behavior from both schools(bench, players and parents). Players flipping the middle finger (both shcools) to opposing fans, dirty play and mouths that wouldn’t quit. As Skyline players got on the bus they were talking about jumping the refs. It is apparent that neither of these coaches have any control over their players. This behavior seems to be the normal for Skyline and Mt View. I would suggest the AD from both schools take a good hard look at their coaches and players as many reputations are being ruined by the of player discipline.
Skyline is so mean. Last time I played them they beat me up. Those jerks! I just wanted to play A good game. And they beat me up for no reason!
