Pinnacle boys hoops star Drew Bender chooses Rice
Pinnacle senior shooting guard Drew Bender has verbally committed to play for Rice next season, he said.
He went on a visit to the school this past weekend and decided this morning it was the place for him. It was his first time in Houston.
“The team was great, the staff was great, the academics,” Bender said. “Everything was perfect.”
Bender averaged 14.4 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.2 assists last season as the Pioneers advanced to the Division I state semifinals.
He recently narrowed his list down to four schools and chose Rice over UC Irvine, Princeton and Northeastern. Bender said he will play mostly shooting guard and small forward in college.
“They want me to come in and contribute (immediately), and that’s my expectation,” Bender said.
He is the second Division I commitment from Pinnacle in the past two years, following power forward Cody McDavis, who is currently at Northern Colorado. Junior small forward Dorian Pickens will also play Division I basketball.
