Gilbert baseball with three D-I signees for second time in three years

Posted by on November 14, 2012 – 11:31 am

The Gilbert baseball team will have three seniors sign letters of intent with Division I schools for the second time in three years next week.

Shortstop Dustin Peterson (Arizona State), outfielder Josh Moore (Utah) and infielder Jack Zoellner (New Mexico) have all verbally committed to their respective colleges and will make it official on Tuesday at a Buffalo Wild Wings in Gilbert.

Moore made the All-Tribune second team last season while Peterson was an honorable mention selection.

Shortstop Drew Stankiewicz (ASU), catcher Nathaniel Causey (ASU) and left-hander Stephen Tarpley (Southern California) were the players who signed together three years ago. Stankiewicz hit .265 last season with seven RBIs. Causey hit .288 with a homer and 15 RBIs and led the team with a .422 on-base percentage. Tarpley was 5-3 with a 3.22 ERA and struck out 67 batters in 78 1/3 innings.

Dont be afraid to mention that Dustin Peterson is the brother of UNM All-American 3B DJ Peterson (Gilbert HS-2010) who was a member of the ‘Team USA’ National Team. You can get all his stats at golobos.com.
And Dustin is also the cousin of Nathaniel Causey of ASU.

Don’t be afraid to mention how they haven’t won a state championship in 20.

First I’ll say how unfortunate that Dustin can’t be recognized for his own efforts… outside of the reputations of his brother or cousin. It’s his time and no one else’s right now. Let also be sure to recognize Josh Moore and Jacks accomplishments. Nice job gentlemen!

Secondly, Desert Ridge, state championships in no way play to the future successes of an individual player. Championships are the efforts of a team and no one individual. So, to that end, how many D1 signings has DR had in the last 3 years?

Try to celebrate these kids great accomplishments. Remember, it’s not about you.

    Kyle, well written article!

I know your paper covers the East Valley and it’s an amazing accomplishment for those young men. Look at the team that knocked that team out of the state tourney last year (St. Mary’s). Goes to show you that solid teamwork and an up-and-coming program can beat those guys on the East side.

  • Desert Ridge Fan says:

Good for all players from both schools but let’s be honest here. More Desert Ridge players have gone on to play college baseball (JUCO and Division 1 mostly) or been drafted. I do recall Desert Ridge beating Gilbert 95% of the time and winning back to back state titles.

Anyone else but the players DAD have anything to say?
