Corona tops Chandler to win GCU wrestling showcase

A pair of heavyweight wrestling programs vied for supremacy at the Southwest Showdown Championships last weekend at Grand Canyon University.

Jim Martinez’s Corona del Sol team took top honors and the championship with a perfect 8-0 record, including a 40-33 win against Chandler (7-1) in the championship match.

Freshman Alex Carrillo (106 pounds), junior Zach Walton (145 pounds), junior Ethan Tursini (160 pounds), freshman Bridger Barker (170 pounds), and senior Josh Caliendo (220 pounds) all went undefeated in ind. matches for the Aztecs during the tournament.

Tucson Ironwood Ridge took third place with a 7-2 team record while Anthem Boulder Creek also finished 7-2 and finished in fourth after tiebreakers.

Chandler’s Dalton Brady (132 pounds) was named the tournament’s Outstanding Wrestler among the lightweight divisions. Joe Byrd (170 pounds) from Boulder Creek was named the Outstanding Wrestler among the heavyweight classes.
