Girls basketball games to watch
Here are a few girls basketball games of note going on this week around the East Valley.
All records are unofficial and as of Monday afternoon Dec. 10. All games are 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
Xavier at Mountain View: A possible playoff preview. Xavier (8-1) has lost only to Mountain Pointe, and will get the Pride again later this week. It’s a big week of tests for the Gators, especially in defending Mountain View’s terrific backcourt. The Toros’ record (3-4) is no reflection on how good Henry Bribiescas team is (or how it will be in a month or two). Mountain View lost to Tolleson to open the regular season and twice to top-notch California schools in the La Jolla Sweet Sixteen tournament to end November/begin December. They’ve won easily twice since then over Westwood and Desert Mountain.
Pinnacle at Tolleson: A perennial championship game matchup dating back to the 5A Division II days, Pinnacle remains a title contender. Tolleson could be, though not quite as strong as previous incarnations, it consistently finds a way to be there at the end. The Pioneers (12-0) have one of the best in guard Sydney Wiese and plenty of help around her, but have only been tested (barely) once so far in beating a good Desert Vista team.
Mesa at Mountain View: The rivalry matchup feels a bit one-sided to Mountain View on paper, but it’ll be a good week for the Jackrabbits (or possibly a rude awakening) because of a meeting with Mountain Pointe followed by the Toros.
Mountain Pointe at Xavier: Obviously having already faced Mountain View, Xavier’s week doesn’t get any easier. The Pride (9-1) lost to Pinnacle in the championship game of the Highland tournament around Thanksgiving and already have quality wins against Highland, Tolleson and Xavier (Nov. 27).
Mesquite at Dobson: After a 49-47 loss to Highland to begin the season, the Mustangs have been on track almost all of November and December. They put on an excellent showing at the La Jolla Country Day Sweet 16 tournament in California (same tournament Mountain View also traveled to). Tyler Dumas’ team also had a nice 62-53 win against Chandler last week. Mesquite (6-5) also had a good win over Chandler, but close losses to Hamilton and Xavier.
