St. Mary’s begins trek toward another national title; other holiday hoops notes

The kickoff to the holiday hoops tournament stretch is today, as the Nike Tournament of Champions begins and so does the Horizon Holiday Hoops Invitational.

The St. Mary’s girls basketball team could become the favorite for a second straight mythical national title if it can navigate a three-day stretch against fellow high school powerhouses from around the nation. The Knights begin today against Orlando Dr. Phillips at 4:15 p.m. at Hamilton.

There are 14 different eight-team brackets, with the winners meeting in the semifinals on Friday and the championship game on Saturday. Here is the schedule for the other East Valley girls teams today:

10 a.m.: Chandler vs. Etiwanda (Calif.) at Chandler; 11:15 a.m.: Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) vs. Dobson at Perry; 12:30 p.m.:  Mater Dei Catholic vs. Mountain Pointe at Basha; 1:45 p.m.: Hamilton vs. Piedmont (Calif.) at Arizona College Preparatory; Oaks Christian (Calif.) vs. Desert Vista at Chandler; 3 p.m.: Lou Dantzler Prep (Calif.) vs. Williams Field at Perry; 4:15 p.m.: Bradhaw Christian vs. Poston Butte at Chandler; (Calif.); 5:30 p.m.: Hawthorne (Calif.) vs. Mesquite at Arizona College Preparatory; Salesian vs. Pinnacle at Basha; 6:30 p.m.: Horizon Christian (Calif.) vs. Perry at Arizona College Preparatory; 6:45 p.m.: Santa Margarita (Calif.) vs. Marcos de Niza at Perry; Rosary (Calif.) vs. Basha at Perry; American Fork (Utah) vs. Mountain View at Basha.

The Horizon Holiday Boys Hoops Invitational runs today through Saturday as well. It is an eight-team tournament, with the championship game on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.

The schedule for today’s East Valley games:

3 p.m.: Marcos de Niza vs. Arcadia; 6:30 p.m.: Scottsdale Christian vs. Centennial; 8:15 p.m.: Horizon vs. Coronado.

All games are at Horizon.
