Perry wrestlers head to frozen tundra
Perry wrestlers are about to receive both culture and climate shock.
The Pumas are headed to the Oshkosh on the Water Classic wrestling invitational in Wisconsin on Dec. 26. Several states send kids to this annual tournament, mostly from Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois (and the one Arizona school).
It is a 60-team tournament, for two days (Dec. 28 and 29), held at University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
Last year the Pumas finished 15th out of 60. The Pumas have two kids who placed there last year, so they may get seeded: Seniors Arch Ratliff (122 pounds) and Daniel Serrano (195).
In addition to both the wrestling and cultural experience (as much as one can in northern Wisconsin in late December), Perry coach Darren Johnson said the team will also tour Lambeau Field. It also helps, he said, that the Midwest is full of D-II and D-III colleges that have wrestling who’ll be in attendance.
