Catching up on holiday hoops tournaments

Numerous holiday basketball tournaments took place last week. Here are some results and observations:


* Campo Verde won its division in the SoCal Holiday Prep Classic. The Coyotes went 3-0 in pool play and defeated San Diego Del Norte, 49-40, in the championship game. Stephanie Orji was named tournament MVP and teammate Cori Ramos was an all-tournament selection. Ramos had 19 points in the title game to lead Campo Verde.

* Valley Christian defeated Tempe Prep 46-45 on  a lay-up by Ashley Koch to win the Valley Christian Invitational. Both teams went undefeated in pool play to make the championship game. Tempe Prep is the defending Division IV champion and seems ready for another run, while the Trojans look to compete for a Division III title. Camille Zimmerman led all scorers with 18 points for the Knights. Koch led Valley Christian with 13.

* Thunderbird defeated Arcadia, 34-30, to win the Lady Titans Winter Hoops Classic. Thunderbird beat Saguaro by a point in the semifinals to advance, while Arcadia knocked off Peoria by 19 in its semifinal game.

* Desert Vista defeated Seton Catholic, 50-42, to win the Northwest Desert Classic. The Thunder went 5-0 in the tournament.


* No. 3 Desert Mountain beat Mountain Pointe, 67-62, to win the Holiday Hoops Fest at Boulder Creek. Will Goff had 16 points to lead four scorers in double figures for the Wolves, who have won seven straight.

* No. 6 Chaparral defeated Perry, 68-66 in overtime, to win the Alvarez Tire Holiday Hoops Classic. The Pumas finished 4-1, including a 32-point win over Paradise Valley in the semifinals. Perry junior point guard Jordan Howard was named to the all-tournament team. His 25.4 points per game average this season is tops in the East Valley.

* No. 2 Mesa lost to San Marcos (Calif.) Mission Hills, 60-53, in the championship game of the Under Armour Classic. The Jackrabbits finished 3-1 in the tournament against top California schools.

* Highland defeated Brophy, 59-50, to win the McClintock Holiday Shootout. The Hawks defeated Higley, Mountain Ridge and Saguaro to make the championship game. Highland has won nine in a row. Chandler defeated Saguaro by a point in the third place game.

* Corona del Sol lost to West Hollywood Pacific Hills, 63-58, in the de facto championship game of the VisitMesa.com Basketball Challenge. The Aztecs had a 10-point lead at halftime but went cold after intermission. Corona del Sol and Pinnacle were the most impressive local teams in the tournament, each finishing 3-1. Aztecs point guard Casey Benson was named Most Outstanding Player of the tournament.

    Chapparral was once again a complete embarrassment to high school sports and what it is really about!!! I played college basketball and my son will play major college football and watching them in this whole tournament was a travisty. Their coach should be fired!!!
