Boys soccer matches to see this week

Posted by on January 2, 2013 – 5:00 pm

The big tournaments have come and gone in soccer, as the Arizona Soccer Showcase lived up to its billing as being one of the state’s elite collections of talent (nice out-of-state talent as well), along with the Dobson Mustang Classic, where Campo Verde continued to prove its ascension (boys and girls) is legitimate.

Only a couple matches dot the latter parts of this week before the schedule ramps up a bit next week.

(All records are unofficial in power rankings through Wednesday afternoon; All matches at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted).

Friday

Hamilton at Corona del Sol: After a little early-season wobbling, Hamilton (5-0) lone loss came to Desert Vista, 1-0, in the Tempe Diablo tournament championship match. Nick Markette’s team has rolled on behind its defense. The jury is still out a bit on Corona del Sol (3-2) which lost 1-0 to a good Notre Dame (Division II) squad before its week-long hiatus. Dan Salas’ team has solid wins against Red Mountain and barely lost to a solid Desert Vista squad.  The two schools meet again Jan. 10.

Mountain Pointe at Brophy (Wed.); Brophy at Mountain Pointe (Fri.):  It’s true: someone beat Brophy. It was San Clemente, a top-notch California team during the AZ Soccer Showcase on New Year’s Eve. The Broncos (5-0) don’t have much time to regroup but they beat Mountain Pointe, 3-0, two weeks ago. The Pride (2-3) have lost twice to Desert Vista and once to Brophy, and these two schools play each other again in two days, after which time the Pride could be the best 2-5 team in the state heading into a matchup with Mesa.
