Girls basketball games to see this week

Posted by on January 2, 2013 – 4:38 pm

It’s a bit of a temporary lull in the girls basketball kingdom this week because of New Year’s and most tournaments have been completed (Nike TOC, Arcadia, Valley Christian, NW Desert Christian tournament, etc…) and school’s are close to returning from Winter Break.

A slow week for sure as action begins anew on Friday and ramps up again in-full next week, but there are a couple worth checking out late this week, primarily in Chandler.

(All records are unofficial and for power rankings).

Thursday

Basha at Marana Mountain View (2 p.m.):  At No. 40 in the power rankings, Basha (2-4) needs to get in gear quickly to have a shot at moving up. The “strength of schedule” portion should help the Bears given the competition, which, of course, can also be a hindrance. The Bears have Hamilton twice, Chandler (the Wolves already beat up the Bears once), Highland and Gilbert on the schedule, along with Perry (Jan. 4) and a couple others. Mountain View (5-1) lost to Mesa during the Pepsi Holiday tournament in Flagstaff in early December, its only East Valley competition of the season.

Friday

Chandler at St. Mary’s (7 p.m.):  St. Mary’s begins the power rankings season after its 48-game winning streak ended despite a valiant comeback during the Nike Tournament of Champions, and the Knights aren’t likely to have problems moving on. They already beat Chandler, 76-50, early this season. Chandler (3-3) is No. 23, and, in a nutshell, faces an awful road of opposition: St. Mary’s, Perry, Basha, Mountain View, Dobson and Desert Vista all in the next couple of weeks, then Hamilton twice and Xavier in a three-game stretch to end the regular season. Somehow, No. 16 St. Mary’s landed a stretch of five consecutive home games to being 2013 and the Knights (5-0) will get a much-needed uptick in power rankings schedule: Chandler, Hamilton, Xavier and Pinnacle are all upcoming.
