Girls soccer matches to see this week

Posted by on January 2, 2013 – 6:29 pm

There are several more intriguing matchups in girls soccer late this week than the boys side. Why? No idea. But we won’t pry as to “why.”

Instead, enjoy a couple days of solid matchups (certainly more in quantity as well).

(All power rankings records are unofficial; All matches at 6 p.m. unless otherwise noted):

Mountain Pointe at Xavier:  It was 6-0 in favor of Xavier in late November to begin the season, but the Pride are better even with a couple ties and a close loss or two since. In an odd twist, the Pride will have a week off before facing Xavier yet again on Jan. 10.  The Gators (3-1) have a loss to Pinnacle, plus Tucson Catalina Foothills and La Costa Canyon (Calif.) in tournaments. A big matchup with Hamilton Jan. 8 awaits.

Gilbert at Skyline:  The Tigers took the first matchup, 2-0, but Gilbert is coming off a 7-1 trouncing by Highland and a rough showing at the Arizona Soccer Showcase. Skyline has lost three consecutive matches (not all were power ranking matches) and faces the Tigers, Red Mountain, Mountain View and Highland and Perry in the next two weeks. Gilbert faces a surging Basha squad on Friday.

Seton Catholic at Valley Christian (4 p.m.):   Welcome back to school: Seton has five matches in eight days, including at Combs on Friday, and the Sentinels have lost three consecutive matches. VC has lost two in a row after a five-match winning streak. The Trojans, too, are about to go through a four-match-in-six-days stretch in two weeks.

Chandler at Mesquite:  A solid showing in the Tempe Diablo Classic followed by a 1-0 loss to Basha stewed the Wolves a bit during this winter break, but Chandler (3-1) has a chance to make a move before the schedule gets more difficult in the latter half of January.  These two meet again at Chandler H.S. on Friday.

Gilbert at Basha:  It wasn’t all elite competition (though Campo Verde is making its name in Div. II) but the Bears served some notice in winning the Dobson Mustang Classic. The Bears’ 0-2-1 start is but a distant memory now as Greg Johnson continues to push the Bears in the right direction after a couple years. Another good test here against Ben Holzer’s crew, which has a tough little stretch here between the Bears, then Highland and  Perry next week.

Mesa at Desert Vista: After an 0-4 start, the Jackrabbits are 4-2-1 since, including a trip to the semifinals of the Mustang Classic before falling to Basha. This, however, could be the toughest test in quite awhile. The other caveat here being Mesa has nine matches in the next 14 days. Meanwhile, it’s 11 consecutive wins for Desert Vista and counting, and a relatively favorable schedule to keep that undefeated streak alive.

Chandler vs. Mesquite:  The up-and-down has continued for Chandler, but the Wolves (3-1) are in position to make a run at the postseason in the next month, and this is the second of back-to-back matches in consecutive days against struggling Mesquite. With Basha, Hamilton and Desert Vista comprising most of the rest of the Wolves schedule, these are absolute musts to win.

Gilbert at Basha:  Even after a tournament championship during winter break, Basha still has to show something against a top Div. I team to earn a high seed in the postseason, and the Bears won’t have a lot of real good chances to do so with their remaining schedule. This is one such chance (along with the Jan. 24 rematch, plus against Highland to end the regular season two days later).
