Tracking the top five
Desert Mountain took over the No. 1 spot in the Tribune’s latest Division I boys basketball rankings, making it the fourth team to sit atop the poll this season. With that in mind, I took a look back at how the top-5 has stacked up each week since the start of the year.
A couple observations: Dobson was there for the first three weeks but hasn’t been back since Dec. 3, and has teetered in and out of the rankings the past month or so. Pinnacle also fell out after Dec. 3, and that’s when the assumed top four teams in the state began to make their mark. Cesar Chavez, Mesa, Desert Mountain and Corona del Sol have each been in the top-5 since Dec. 10, and have not left the top four in the past month. The No. 5 spot has been a revolving door all year.
