Marcos de Niza adding Kendall Konopka to Wall of Fame
Former Marcos de Niza baseball standout Kendall Konopka will be added to the school’s Wall of Fame on Saturday at 9 a.m. on the varsity baseball field.
Konopka was named the 5A-II baseball Player of the Year by the Arizona Baseball Coaches Association as a senior in 2010. He hit .606 that season with 10 homers and 49 RBIs, leading the Padres to the state semifinals.
Coach Felipe Becerra said the usual waiting period for Wall of Fame consideration is 10 years, but Konopka’s mother, Kim, is terminally ill with cancer and the ceremony has been moved up so she can witness it.
“We decided that because Kendall was worthy of such a distinct honor… that we would rush the ceremony so that his mother could share in this special moment,” Becerra said in an email.
Konopka originally went to Point Loma Nazarene University out of high school and now plays at Arizona Christian.
