Special education student at Marcos de Niza hits special shot
There is a box score of Friday’s boys basketball game between Marcos de Niza and Yuma on Maxpreps.com.
It doesn’t look much different than the thousands of others on the site, but for one thing. Every player on the Padres has a jersey number coinciding with his name except for Dakota Barnes. Instead, the Marcos de Niza senior’s says ‘mgr.’
You see, the Marcos de Niza senior special education student doesn’t suit up for the Padres. He tried out for one day before switching over to the team manager role.
But on Friday, after a half-season of helping out on the bench any way he could, Barnes got his chance to dress out with the team.
Better yet, the lead was big enough at the end of the game to get him some playing time.
He took three 3-point shots in the game and two missed. But the third is one he will never forget.
As time ticked down, Barnes was fed the ball in the corner and nailed a shot before being mobbed by teammates. Here is video of the heartwarming moment.
