Campo Verde girls vs. Verrado soccer matchup
Div. III Girls Soccer semifinal
No. 4 Campo Verde vs. No.1 Verrado
When: 7 p.m. Tuesday
Where: Arcadia H.S. (4703 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix)
Outlook: A combination of expansion, peripheral location and the division alignments have conspired to do Campo Verde good. Rosanne Headley’s team hasn’t been short on many end of the draw this season (21-2-1). Campo Verde hasn’t been here in its brief history (three years), as the Coyotes were knocked out of the quarterfinals the past two postseasons. Breanna Olson is having a big postseason for Campo Verde, and the Coyotes’ defense was much-improved against Fountain Hills in the quarterfinals then against WF in the first round, when a 2-0 Campo lead nearly evaporated. Lauren Crenshaw and Meg McDowell have also shined. Verrado is in its second consecutive semifinals, falling to eventual-champion Goodyear Estrella Foothills last year, and hasn’t allowed a goal since Jan. 14. The Vipers returned seven starters from last year’s 18-1-1 team so it’s little secret how it earned a No. 1 ranking in Div. III. Campo Verde has yet to lose to a Division III opponent this season. Its two losses came to Division I Mountain View and Basha plus one tie. Oddly enough if Campo Verde reaches Friday’s championship match it will be a home match, a rarity when it comes to state tournaments. These teams had two common opponents: Mohave (both C.V. and Verrado won those matches) and Sunrise Mountain (Verrado won, CV tied 0-0), though Headley said a couple JV coaches scouted Verrado earlier in the tournament.
